Computers and Education compiled a study that focused on providing access to technology titled, Connecting schools, community, and family with ICT: Four-year trends related to school level and SES of public schools in Florida. In the study, it is stated that, “Community and family involvement in schools is a well-documented antecedent to student success; yet, educators often find it challenging to increase involvement with parents and members of diverse communities.” (Liverstone & Helsper, 2007). The study provided education pertaining to information and computer technology (ICT) to parents in all socioeconomic status (SES) communities. It concluded that students in all SES groups increased their contributions for their children’s ICT access. The study provided students who lived in areas that were more economically advanced with ICT contributions to families and their communities. Schools in lower SES communities provided contributions for ICT access within schools and educated parents and community. The purpose was to decrease the digital divide. Whether providing parents, students, teachers, or communities with education and providing them with ICT, the main point is the fact that increasing education and awareness regarding technology is important. It is absolutely critical that students learn to use technology to drive learning. Education is the only way that individuals, whether old or young, can learn to use technology to bring learning to high levels. Providing parents with technology tools to check out and use at home, offering classes where they can learn how to use certain technologies, and having parents/students work together to use technology tools are all excellent places to start!
It is important to provide equitable access to the internet within a school setting, starting with professional development for educators. Implementing lessons that are learner-centered and support high curriculum standards for all students is critical. Providing students with access to computers is a main component to ensure students have access to digital tools. Technology integration should be promoted within the school setting, which means training teachers not only on how to use technology but on how to integrate them into lessons that address the needs of large groups of students, small group, as well as individualized instruction. This will have a direct effect on student learning, as well as competence in technology for students.
