4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: CopyrighT and Fair Use
Reflection:
This artifact was created in ITEC7445, Multimedia and Web Design in Education. I created a Prezi on the topic of Copyright and Fair Use with images. I made it available to my peers in the form of a screencast presentation. For this project, I researched aspects of ethical use regarding images, prepared a presentation on my findings, and presented the information through a screencast that I created. I was utterly shocked and amazed to learn that there were so many rules and stipulations regarding the use of images in websites, presentations, and for general use. I learned that there are websites that are free to use for non-profit purposes, royalty-free images, or images that require a fee to reproduce. Images are not only contained to clip art images, but photographs and other digital forms of art that are on the world wide web. Copyright laws protect the work that people create, and ensure the ethical use of images using technology. This artifact helped me ensure my fellow educators and students used technology in a safe, healthy, and ethical manner.
The Copyright and Fair Use presentation demonstrates mastery of Standard 4.2 because it promotes healthy, legal and ethical use of technology. This artifact allowed me to model situations where copyright may be questioned and allowed me to show how to facilitate a safe, healthy, and legal use of copyright. The Prezi can be used as a reference for teachers as they are implementing technology in their classroom. Digital information and technologies were explored and I was able to properly facilitate correct use of this information.
By completing this artifact, I learned that a vast majority of instances are acceptable for using images in educational situations, as long as there is no profitable situation attached to the use of the image. I learned to cite sources on a regular basis to ensure no violations of copyright, and to make sure that I have an understating of the copyright attached to each image that I use for a variety of purposes. Related to my classroom, I was able to reflect on the topic of cyberbullying and ethical focus of using images. This is an aspect that I think I could have touched upon more if I were seeking to enhance the quality of the artifact. I could have made a lesson outline of how to teach students about ethical uses of images in their lives.
The Copyright and Fair Use Presentation directly impacts faculty development. The Prezi was created as a learning tool for professional development. It provided an overview of copyright laws and was created to educate teachers on acceptable technology use. Teachers gained an understanding of how to correctly use images in copyright and effective learning environments resulted. This also transfers over to student learning, because having an understanding on copyright allows for teachers to teach students correct copyright laws. When creating blogs, websites, and presentations of their own, students need to be aware of safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of information.
