Artifact: EDmodo Professional Learning Session/ Handouts
Reflection:
This artifact was created in the course ITEC 7460, Professional Learning and Technology Innovation. For this assignment, which was a field experience, I analyzed the professional learning needs of the teachers at my school through a digital survey. I created a professional learning session based on those needs, focusing on the tool Edmodo. I prsented an overview of the tool and helped teaches create accounts as well as explore the tool to utilize with students. I created a PowerPoint presentation with accompanying handouts to provide teachers with ample support initiating Edmodo in their learning environment. This ensured successful professional development during the learning session as well as after it was completed. Teachers could refer and follow the handout based on preference.
The Edmodo presentation demonstrates mastery of Standard 3.5 because the PowerPoint presentation and handouts were created for teachers needing additional support with facilitating the tool in their digital learning environment. The resources helped teachers troubleshoot if they experienced a problem navigating through the tool. To complete the presentation, I spent a great deal of time researching and practicing using Edmodo. I was not an expert on the learning management system prior to creating and implementing the professional learning sessions. I knew there was a need for such a tool at my school, however. Thorough this process, I was able to troubleshoot basic problems/difficulties that would arise as teachers explored Edmodo. I found that as a technology leader within my school, there are many occasions where teachers must troubleshoot in their digital learning environment. I took time to utilize the tool and I made sure I understood problems that dealt with software. I took time to create support for teachers to figure out how to facilitate learning using Emodo, using both the iPad and the computer. Teachers were able to understand how to use different forms of hardware to implement student centered, technology enhanced learning. Not only did this artifact provide me with the opportunity me experience troubleshooting, but I was able to provide support to struggling educators within my school.
Technology facilitators should promote best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment. This particular experience gave me the opportunity to increase my skills as a presenter, as well as a “teacher of teachers”. I really enhanced my presentation skills and increased my confidence as a leader at my school. This experience taught me how to conduct myself in a large-group professional learning session. To improve the quality of this artifact, I likely would have would have implemented the professional learning in a different type of format. I would have truly supported online learning by implementing online professional learning. I could have used a learning management system such as an online system like Blackboard instead of a face-to-face format.
This artifact directly impacted faculty development at my school. The purpose of the professional learning was to develop the faculty's use of technology. Not only did I conduct professional development that gave individual teachers information about Edmodo, but this knowledge transferred to affect other faculty members as well. Once teachers were informed and comfortable using educational technology in the classroom, they were able to share information with their students and colleagues. Indirectly, this experience impacted student learning as teachers transferred skills gained back to their classrooms for student use.
