Diversity
As an educator, I am committed to creating a learning environment that accepts and respects each student’s unique qualities. Each individual possesses unique gifts as and talents with varying cultural, gender, ethnic, religious, and societal backgrounds. We bring our different traits and experiences together to create a balanced environment. As an educator, it is my responsibility to foster a fair and equal instructional environment. I consistently adapt lessons to ensure student learning. I ensure that I model and facilitate the design and implementation of learning experiences by adjusting the content, process, product, and learning environment for higher level learners, lower level learners, as well students with disabilities (SWD). As society becomes increasingly diverse, I make it a point to utilize technology within my classroom to address all learners, regardless of their educational background or level.
During my course of study in the Instructional Technology program at Kennesaw State University, I have acquired knowledge, skills, and dispositions to use technology to promote the diverse needs of all students. Each course gave me a unique perspective to enhance my knowledge on how to differentiate instruction through the use of technology. I heave learned how to provide students with additional ways to acquire content, information, and demonstrate their learning. In the course ITEC 7430, Internet Tools in the Classroom, I learned how to use differentiation to create a technology-enhanced learning experience to promote learning for all students. I completed a module that focused on English Language Learners (ELL) and enhanced my knowledge on how to differentiate content to meet their needs. I learned that teachers should draw on effective strategies for increasing content knowledge, integrating technology to support instruction, and how to successfully motivate students of all levels and abilities. These experiences showed me how technology provided stimulation and aided in the visualization process to optimize instruction.
I also gained knowledge, skills, and dispositions to use technology to promote the diverse needs of all students in the course ITEC7445, Multimedia and Web Design in Education. This experience promoted the use of assistive technologies (AT) to increase student learning. Through this experience, I gained an understanding of the importance in the proper knowledge, resources, and method of delivery required of a technology leader/teacher. This knowledge about struggling learners who require individual accommodations and finding how technology can meet those needs, helped me model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diversity, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. Also, the fact that I could reflect on on this experience with the school community helped me promote the importance of using of technology with all students, regardless of their differences in socioeconomic background, ability level, etc.
I have successfully demonstrated my ability to address diversity in today’s schools in the following ways:
· Provided professional development for teachers on how to use technology to differentiate instruction and meet the diverse needs of all students.
· Created technology driven assessments using data teams at my school.
· Modeled and advocated for the use of technology for challenging tasks and higher order thinking for all students
· Identified and addressing the unique needs of students who have had limited prior computer experience.
· Collaborated with administrators to provide high quality, technology-rich learning experience for students by promoting equitable access to digital tools.
· Reviewed software and web resources for bias or insensitivity.
· Collected and used demographic or subgroup data for targeted school improvement through the School Strategic Plan (SSP).
